Like all children Grade 4/5 at Panton Hill Primary School are enthusiastic, curious and keen to learn. Over the last 4 months this potent brew resulted in an amazing range of scientific experiments, the introudction of a whole school recycling program and the development of students as strong leaders in the school community. In June Joseph Natoli introduced students to the world of worms. The message was simple - if we want to eat good food tomorrow we have to recycle our food scraps back to soil through naure's recyclers - worms. The classroom worm farm became an instant hit. But the questions from (very) bright nine years olds kept coming. "What would happen if we cut off their tail?" "Fed them on beetroot?", etc. Within the first week class teacher Frances Bonnici had split students into 5 groups, with each group carefully designing an exciting range of experiments. Over the next 8 weeks students taught all the classes in the school about worms; set up a whole school recycling project; became expert worm carers and presented their fascinating experiments to the Schools For A Sustainable Future Annual Presentation Day. It has been an experience they won't forget in a hurry and which has enthused the whole school into becoming active protectors of their environment.
